Samuel Pennypacker -- governor, jurist and historian -- was born in Phoenixville and educated at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied law. He was called to the bar in 1868 and elected president of the Law Academy of Philadelphia. In 1889, he became judge of the Court of Common Pleas and remained in that post for 20 years. Monks of the Meerschaum was a social club formed in 1859 after Jesse Y. Burk, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, drew a picture of a monk with a pipe suspended from his girdle on the fly-leaf of his textbook. His friend, Edwin F.
